The art of the explicit assumption
I admit it... I'm an ass.
I choose to be one of my own free will, your choice is, of course, yours to make.
My assinity is based on the assumption that I am what I am at this moment in time and that I will be something different in the next instant (femto-second or however you choose to calibrate that which we call time by consensus). I'm assuming 'MYSELF' based on the data I have available.
Assumptions are good, without assumptions there can be no building blocks for conceptualisation.
If we were to discuss, say, the concept of of quantum data storage in human consciousness, and we came to the point (which seems to be the sticky bit in the proposal) where the transfer of such data in the quantum realm is rendered unlikely due to the physical distances involved within the cell structure of the brain, then our discussion would falter UNLESS we were allowed to make the EXPLICIT ASSUMPTION that a previously undiscovered (or yet unproven) medium might exist to facilitate such a transfer of data over the distances involved.
Explicit assumptions allow us to theorise and test/prove/eliminate our theories against observation, etc. The assumptions themselves may be proved inaccurate but they serve as a stepping stone to discovery and growth. The problem occurs not due to the assumption itself but because we are sometimes unable to give the assumption it's proper priority once the evidence starts to stack up against it. We sometimes can't 'let them go'.
What you once believed to be true turned out to be an explicit assumption based on the data you had available at that time (and will be again, I might add).
I move that ' don't assume anything ' should be amended to something like:-
Assumptions are only valid when viewed in their relevent context and lose their usefulness when promoted above that.
What say you all?
PS. Working on the logic that an Explicit Assumption ceases to be one once it's proven either way.

Although, in my experience of interpersonal communication explicit assumption ALWAYS takes a large part of discussion but people don't always recognise it as such.
Say for instance, the assumption that generally people don't see pain and suffering or conflict as desirable.
Some assumptions are virtually universally embedded.
Technically, we could say that in personal interaction we ASSUME a position and test it against the opinion of others. Again, when that assumption is EXPLICIT, then everyone understands that the assumption is being tested. Only when the assumption is treated as fact does it become problematic in interaction.
In other words, we make explicit assumptions all the time for the sake of discussion. Recognising an assumption for what it is can be a very useful interpersonal tool.
I can understand your position though Please bear in mind that I'll try and indicate those assumptions that I make which are intended to be explicit. When I make the other sort, give me a nod and I'll endeavour to put myself right on them (with your kind help).
